The Basics

What Is Bathroom Waterproofing?

Bathroom waterproofing is the process of applying a waterproof membrane to floors, walls, and wet areas - like your shower - before tiling. It's what actually stops water getting through, not the tiles or grout: water passes through tile joints constantly, and it's the membrane underneath that keeps it out of your walls and floor structure.

In New Zealand, bathroom waterproofing isn't optional. It's required under NZ Building Code Clause E3 for every wet area, and for consented work it must be carried out by a qualified applicator and signed off with a PS3 Producer Statement. Done properly, it protects the timber framing, plasterboard, and concrete underneath your tiles from moisture, mould, and long-term structural damage.

  • Required by NZ Building Code Clause E3
  • Sign-off needed PS3 Producer Statement
  • Applied Before tiling begins
  • Protects Framing, plasterboard & concrete

Bathroom Waterproofing Requirements in NZ at a Glance

  • Wet areas (showers, floors, splash zones) must be waterproofed to NZ Building Code Clause E3
  • Consented work requires a PS3 Producer Statement from a qualified applicator
  • The membrane must be installed as a complete system, with correct thickness and full curing before tiling
  • Auckland Council inspectors will check for compliant documentation before sign-off
Certification & Compliance

PS3 Certification & Auckland Council Compliance

Under NZ Building Code Clause E3, there are strict bathroom waterproofing requirements that apply to every wet area - and if your project requires council consent, those requirements must be independently verified.

We provide a PS3 Producer Statement upon completion, confirming the work complies with NZ Building Code (E3 Internal Moisture), follows approved systems and standards, and was completed by a qualified applicator.

PS3 Certified – Council Compliant – Done Right the First Time

Water damage in a bathroom doesn’t start big — it starts silently, behind your tiles.

A small failure in waterproofing allows moisture to seep into your walls and floors. Over time, that leads to mould, rot, structural damage, and costly repairs that often require ripping the entire bathroom apart.

** The truth:
Most bathroom failures in Auckland happen because waterproofing was either done incorrectly or not done to code.

At Dakom Tiling, we make sure that never happens.

We provide PS3-certified bathroom waterproofing in Auckland, fully compliant with NZ Building Code Clause E3 and accepted by the Auckland Council for consented work.

What Happens When Waterproofing Is Done Wrong

Most issues aren’t visible until it’s too late.

By the time you notice something, you could be dealing with:

  • Tiles lifting or cracking
  • Persistent damp or musty smells
  • Black mould inside the walls
  • Rotten timber framing
  • Concrete substrate damage

And at that point, it’s no longer a simple fix — it’s a full bathroom rebuild.

We regularly fix failed waterproofing jobs across Auckland. In almost every case, the cause is the same: poor application, wrong products, or no certification.

How We Waterproof Bathrooms (Properly)

We don’t cut corners – because corners are exactly where most leaks start.

Using ARDEX-certified waterproofing systems, we apply membranes as a complete system (not mismatched products), ensuring long-term performance.

Every project includes:

  • Full waterproofing of shower floors and walls
  • Sealing of floor-to-wall junctions (critical failure point)
  • Reinforcement of internal/external corners
  • Proper sealing around pipes, drains, and penetrations
  • Correct membrane thickness + curing time before tiling

The result: a fully sealed wet area system, built to last – not just pass inspection.

Nebo and his team of tilers did a 1st class job of our bathroom renovation. Very high level attention to detail with flawless mitre joints and they really took their time getting our herringbone pattern lined up and symmetrical around our shower niche. Great communication, always turned up on time & tided up afterwards. If you’re looking for a very good tiler, at a reasonable price point I would contact Nebo & lock it in. Will be recommending Dakom Tiling to our friends & family for sure.

FAQs

Got questions? Here’s everything you need to know before hiring a tiler

Yes. Under NZ Building Code Clause E3, waterproofing is required in all wet areas, including showers, bathroom floors, and splash zones. Without proper waterproofing, moisture can penetrate behind tiles and cause structural damage over time.

If your project requires building consent, then yes – a PS3 Producer Statement is required. This document confirms that a qualified applicator has completed the waterproofing and complies with NZ regulations. Auckland Council inspectors often require it.

Costs vary depending on the size of the bathroom and scope of work, but typically range from $800 to $2,500+ for standard bathrooms. Complex layouts, repairs, or larger wet areas can increase the price.

DIY waterproofing is allowed in some cases, but it is risky. If the work is not done correctly or lacks certification, it can lead to failed inspections, insurance issues, or expensive repairs later. For consented work, a qualified applicator is required.

Waterproofing usually takes 1–2 days, including application and curing time. Tiling should only begin once the membrane has fully cured to ensure proper performance and compliance.

Yes. If your bathroom has a shower or a bath, waterproofing isn’t optional — it’s a Building Code requirement, not a nice-to-have upgrade. Clause E3 (Internal Moisture) requires wet-area surfaces to be impervious so water can’t get through and damage the building, and the way that’s achieved is a membrane installed behind and underneath the tiles.
