Bathroom Renovation in Auckland – Done Right the First Time
Our in-house team covers every trade a bathroom renovation needs – builders, certified tilers, licensed plumbers, and plastering experts – so nothing is lost between contractors and every stage is done right.
Judge the Finish Before You Book Anyone
Photos are easy to flatter. A slow walk through a finished room is not. Watch how the grout lines run, how the tile meets the glass, and how the floor falls to the waste, because those are the details that separate a bathroom that lasts twenty years from one that fails in five.
-
Set out, not just laid. Tiles planned around the room so cuts land where nobody sees them.
-
Certified membrane underneath. Every tiled surface you can see sits on waterproofing you cannot, with a PS3 where the job needs one.
-
One crew, start to finish. Strip-out, waterproofing, screed, tiling and handover, all the same team.
The Same Standard on Every Job
Different house, different brief, same method. We do not have a budget version of waterproofing and a proper version. Every wet area gets a certified membrane, correct falls to the waste and a planned tile layout, whether it is a compact ensuite or a full family bathroom. The finish you see here is the standard, not the showpiece.
-
Substrate checked first. Walls and floors levelled before tiling, because large tiles show every dip.
-
Tested materials only. Membranes, adhesives and grouts from established suppliers, installed to the manufacturer spec.
-
Backed for 10 years. Our workmanship warranty is in writing, not implied.

The Full Renovation Team Under One Roof
A long-lasting bathroom renovation depends on every trade doing their part properly, and on those trades working together. That's why Dakom Tiling brings the whole team to your project:
Builders
Framing repairs, substrate preparation, nib walls, and shower niches. When the strip-out reveals rotten timber or uneven walls, our builders fix it before anything new goes in.
Licensed Plumbers
Pipe runs, drainage, correct falls to the waste, and fixture installation, all done by licensed plumbers as the NZ Building Code requires.
Plastering & GIB Experts
Wet-area GIB, plastering, and stopping that give tiles a flat, sound surface to bond to. Poor plastering is a hidden cause of cracked tiles and drummy floors. We never skip it.
Certified Tilers & Waterproofers
PS3 certified waterproofing with ARDEX systems, then precision tiling with planned layouts and clean grout lines. This is our core trade and the reason clients find us.

A well-planned bathroom remodel - even a small bathroom or compact ensuite - can transform how the space works without extending the room.
The Bathroom Looks Dated
Old tiles, tired cabinetry, and worn fittings can make the whole home feel older than it is. A fresh, modern bathroom lifts everything around it.
The Layout Does Not Work
An awkward shower, no storage, and wasted floor space make the room frustrating to use every single day.
There Are Signs of Damage
Mould that keeps coming back, dark grout, soft flooring, or a damp smell. These are warning signs, not cleaning problems. They often point to failed waterproofing behind the tiles.
You Want to Add Value
A well-built bathroom is one of the strongest selling points a home can have. Buyers notice bathrooms first, and they notice bad ones even faster.
Whatever your reason, the goal is the same. A bathroom that looks great, works well, and lasts for decades without leaks or repairs.
What a Full Bathroom Renovation Involves
A complete bathroom renovation in Auckland usually follows these steps:
-
Planning and Design
You decide on the layout, tiles, fixtures, and finishes. Keeping the plumbing where it is saves real money. Moving the toilet or shower means new pipe runs, more labour, and often a building consent.
-
Strip-Out
The old tiles, fittings, and linings come out. This is the moment of truth. Hidden moisture damage, rotten framing, or uneven substrates often show up here, and they must be fixed before anything new goes in. Because our builders and plastering experts are part of the same team, these repairs happen immediately, with no waiting weeks for an outside contractor.
-
Plumbing and Electrical
Pipes, drainage, wiring, lighting, and extraction are updated. In New Zealand, this work must be done by licensed plumbers and registered electricians. Ours are part of the project from day one, not subcontractors booked at the last minute.
-
The Critical Stage
Waterproofing
This is the most important stage of the entire project. A compliant membrane is applied to all wet areas and must cure fully before tiling starts. Rushing this step is the number one cause of bathroom failure. Our team explains the whole system on our bathroom waterproofing services in Auckland page.
-
Tiling
Floors, walls, and the shower are tiled with planned layouts, correct falls for drainage, and clean, even grout lines. Quality here is visible for the next twenty years, which is why professional bathroom tiling in Auckland makes such a difference to the finished result.
-
Fit-Off and Finishing
The vanity, toilet, tapware, frameless shower glass, heated towel rail, LED mirror, extractor fan, and lighting go in. If you're adding underfloor heating, it's installed before tiling and commissioned now. The room is sealed, cleaned, and handed over.

How Much Does a Bathroom Renovation Cost in Auckland?
Auckland sits above the national average because labour and material costs are higher here. As a general guide:
Budget Refresh
$8,000 to $18,000
New tapware, vanity, paint, and minor tiling. The layout stays the same and the existing waterproofing is not disturbed.
Standard Renovation
$20,000 to $35,000
Most common in AucklandFull strip-out, new waterproofing, full tiling, new fixtures, and updated plumbing and electrical. This is the most common range for Auckland family bathrooms.
High-End Renovation
$35,000 to $65,000+
Layout changes, large format tiles, custom cabinetry, walk-in showers, and premium fittings.
Where the money goes. Tiling and waterproofing together take up a large share of any budget, and for good reason. They are the layers that protect everything else. If you want a detailed breakdown of labour rates, our guide on how much a tiler costs in New Zealand covers real Auckland pricing per square metre.
One more tip. Always get a fixed, itemised quote. It should list the strip-out, waterproofing product, tiling rate, and fixture costs as separate lines. Independent consumer guides recommend the same approach, because vague quotes are where hidden costs hide.
FAQs About Bathroom Renovation
Got questions? Here is everything you need to know before hiring a tiler, including real Auckland costs, consent rules and honest timeframes.
PS3 Certified Installers1 Do you use your own team or subcontractors?
Dakom Tiling runs the full renovation with one coordinated team: builders, licensed plumbers, plastering and GIB experts, and our own PS3 certified tilers and waterproofers, all managed by a single project manager.
Working as one crew means no delays between trades, no finger-pointing when something needs fixing, and one company accountable for the entire result under our 10-year workmanship warranty.
2 Are you certified for the waterproofing system you install?
Yes. Dakom Tiling holds current manufacturer certification and is able to issue a PS3 certificate where required.
3 How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Auckland?
Most full bathroom renovations in Auckland cost between $20,000 and $35,000. This covers a complete strip-out, new waterproofing, full tiling, new fixtures, and updated plumbing and electrical.
- $8,000 – $18,000 — budget refresh with no layout changes.
- $20,000 – $35,000 — full renovation, most Auckland homes.
- $35,000 – $65,000+ — layout changes and premium materials.
Auckland sits above the national average because labour and material costs are higher here. The best way to avoid surprises is an itemised quote that lists waterproofing, tiling and fixtures as separate lines.
4 Do I need building consent to renovate my bathroom in Auckland?
Not always. Like-for-like work, such as replacing a vanity, toilet or bath in the same position, or retiling without touching the waterproofing, generally does not need consent.
You do need consent if you install a new tiled shower, alter the waterproofing system, move plumbing to a new position, or add a fixture that was not there before.
Once consent covers wet area work, Auckland Council requires a PS3 Producer Statement from a certified waterproofing installer before issuing a Code Compliance Certificate. Unconsented work can cause serious problems when selling or insuring your home.
5 How long does a bathroom renovation take in Auckland?
A standard bathroom renovation takes around two to four weeks from strip-out to handover. Projects with layout changes or consent requirements can take four to six weeks.
Part of that time is non-negotiable: waterproofing membranes must cure fully before tiling can begin, and grout and silicone need time to set. Be cautious of anyone promising a complete renovation in a few days, because the only way to achieve that is by skipping the steps that protect your bathroom long term.
If it is your only bathroom, plan access to other facilities before work starts.
6 Should I choose a tiled shower or an acrylic shower unit?
It depends on your budget and goals. An acrylic unit is cheaper, installs quickly and suits rentals or budget renovations. A tiled shower costs more because it involves waterproofing, screeding correct falls and precision tiling, but it looks far better, uses your space more efficiently and adds more value at resale.
In Auckland, a tiled shower also triggers consent and PS3 requirements, so it must be built by a certified installer. If you plan to stay in the home or sell at the top of the market, a properly built tiled shower is usually worth the difference.
Still unsure about your bathroom? Send us a photo and rough dimensions and we will tell you straight whether you need consent, what it is likely to cost, and how long it will take.
